For adults: parents, carers, teachers and anyone learning on their own.
Terms of use
For children and young people: The rules
The short version
- Only an adult, 18 or over, can make an account or pay. A child always uses Edlumo inside an adult’s account.
- A school signs its own agreement with us. That agreement comes first.
- What you pay for a subject lasts a year. A monthly plan renews each month until you stop it, which takes one press.
- You have 14 days to change your mind, unless you asked to start straight away. We say which before you pay.
- Use Edlumo to learn and to teach. Do not try to break it, or to see what is not yours.
- Your legal rights as a consumer always apply, whatever these terms say.
About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Edlumo. You can write to us at contact@edlumo.co.uk.
By making an account, or by using Edlumo, you agree to these terms. Please read them with our privacy notice, which says what we do with your data.
There is a short version for children and young people: the rules.
Who can have an account
- Only an adult, 18 or over, holds an account and pays. That adult is a school, a tutor, a parent or carer, or someone learning on their own.
- A child always uses Edlumo inside an adult’s account. A school’s, a tutor’s, or a parent’s or carer’s.
- A young person aged 13 or over can have their own email and password inside that account. The adult who made it is still the one we have the agreement with.
- A child can ask for a subject, but cannot buy one. The adult decides and pays.
When you make an account for a child, you confirm you are their parent or carer, or that you have their parent’s or carer’s permission.
Schools and tutors
A school, a group of schools, or a tutor signs a written agreement with us, and a data processing agreement. If those say something different from these terms, they win.
Staff and pupils at a school use Edlumo on the school’s behalf. The school decides who can use it and what happens to its data.
What schools need to know about data protection is on our page for schools.
Your account
- Give us true details, and keep them up to date.
- Keep your password secret. Help a child keep their PIN secret.
- Tell us straight away if you think someone else is using your account.
- You are responsible for what is done in your account with your sign-in details.
Using Edlumo fairly
Use Edlumo to learn, to teach, and to help a child learn. Do not:
- try to see anyone else’s data, or anything your account cannot normally reach
- try to break, overload or get round how it works, or test it for weaknesses without asking us first
- copy our questions, explanations or software to sell or share them
- use automated tools to collect content from it
- pretend to be someone else
If you find a security problem, please tell us at contact@edlumo.co.uk. We thank people who tell us, and we will not take action against anyone who reports one in good faith.
Buying subjects and plans
This part is for families and for people learning on their own. Schools pay on invoice, under their own agreement.
- Prices are in pounds, and are the total you pay. We show the price, and what it is for, before you agree to anything.
- A subject lasts a year from the day you pay. It does not renew by itself. From a month before it ends, you can renew it in your account.
- A monthly plan renews every month until you stop it. We say the price each month before you start. You can stop it in one press, from your account. It runs to the end of the month you have paid for.
- A voucher is typed in at checkout. We show what it takes off before you pay. One voucher per order.
- Payment is taken by Stripe, the card company. We never see your card number.
Changing your mind
You normally have 14 days from the day you buy to cancel and get your money back.
Subjects, plans and papers are digital. You can choose to start using them straight away. If you do, we ask you to agree, before you pay, that you lose the right to cancel once you start. If you have not started using what you bought, you can still cancel within the 14 days.
To cancel, write to us at contact@edlumo.co.uk. We refund you within 14 days, to the card you paid with.
After 14 days, a subject is not refunded, but it stays yours until its year ends.
Sessions with a tutor
Someone learning on their own, aged 18 or over, can book an hour with a tutor we have checked.
- You only pay once the tutor has said yes.
- If the tutor cannot come, or we cannot run the session, you get all your money back.
- Tutors are independent. They are not our employees. We check every tutor before they are shown, including an enhanced DBS check.
- Nothing in a session is recorded.
- If something in a session worries you, use Report a concern on the session’s page.
If something is wrong
Digital content you buy from us must be as described, fit for its purpose, and of satisfactory quality. That is the law.
If it is not, tell us at contact@edlumo.co.uk, and we will put it right or refund you, as the law sets out.
Your rights are explained by Citizens Advice. Nothing in these terms takes them away.
What belongs to whom
The questions, explanations, pictures and software are ours, or used with permission. You may use them while you have an account, to learn and to teach.
What a teacher or a school writes in Edlumo stays theirs. They give us permission to store it and show it to the people they choose.
A child’s answers belong to them. We use them only to run the service, as our privacy notice says.
Keeping it running
We aim to keep Edlumo available, but we do not promise that it will always be available or free of faults. We sometimes pause it to fix or improve it, and try to do that outside school hours.
We may change Edlumo over time. If a change takes away something you have paid for, we tell you, and you can cancel and get back what you paid for the time left.
Our responsibility to you
Edlumo is a learning tool. It supports teaching and learning, and does not replace a teacher, a tutor or a parent’s judgement. Marks, progress and suggestions are a guide.
If something you paid for is not as described, tell us and we will fix it. If we cannot, we will refund you for it.
We are not responsible for:
- losses we could not have expected when you started using Edlumo
- events outside our reasonable control, such as a failure of the internet or of another company’s service
- what happens on websites we link to
- business losses, such as lost profit, lost income or lost opportunity
If you use Edlumo for a business, including as a tutor, our total responsibility to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the problem.
A school’s agreement with us sets out our responsibility to the school.
Your legal rights, and anything the law does not allow us to limit, are not affected by these terms.
Ending the agreement
You can close your account at any time, from your account or by writing to us. Your data is deleted for good 7 days later.
We can pause or close an account if someone seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or to protect a child. We tell you why, unless the law or a child’s safety stops us. If we close an account for no fault of yours, we refund what you paid for the time left.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when the law changes or we add something new. We change the date at the top. If a change matters to you, we tell you at least 30 days before, and you can close your account if you do not agree.
The law
These terms are under the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also go to court there.
If you have a complaint, write to us first at contact@edlumo.co.uk. We will reply within 14 days.
